The Creative Therapy Department, one component of the Center for Creative Expression, utilizes the unique qualities of the creative therapies to meet the emotional, behavioral, communication, physical, and aesthetic needs of persons with disabilities. Modalities include visual arts, dance/movement, music therapy, creative writing, and drama. The first priority of the department is to promote quality of life in the least restrictive environment. This is achieved by assessing individual needs and applying the most effective approach or approaches to reach therapeutic goals. Focusing on strengths to compensate for weaknesses facilitates positive changes while maintaining personal dignity and rights. University students study and train within all modalities of the Creative Therapy department. The clinical training program in Music Therapy is nationally recognized as a model program. Professionals in the field of developmental disabilities and in arts careers are provided ongoing hands on experiences focusing on the use of arts for a variety of needs. The Creative Therapy Department provides individual and group experiences for children, adolescents, and adults residing in area communities. Trained therapists and specialists guide each individual through positive creative experiences. The Center for Creative Expression is an umbrella for a community living environment for Developmentally Disabled Adults called "Signature". This program is unique because the primary criterion for admission is exceptional talent in one of the arts modalities or the potential to develop such talent. Signature has its own day program (Studio XI) in Morganton, NC. The Signature artists participate in the arts as their vocation through the day program. Studio XI has a public gallery where the art can be seen and purchased. For more information concerning Creative Therapy or Studio XI please call Harry Seng at 2823, or E-mail him at Harry.Seng@NCMail.net. |
