The Physical Therapy Department at J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center is an innovative and progressive program aimed at meeting the physical needs of people with developmental disabilities. We serve people who live at the Riddle Developmental Center and people who live in the community. Our department consists of three Physical Therapists and seven PT Assistants. The Physical Therapy Department is involved in many exciting activities. Programs for the people who live here include functional mobility, standing, aquatics research and treatment, wheelchair assessment and modification, pressure mapping for the wheelchair and bed assessments, and assistive technology. We are also involved in environmental adaptations with lifts and bathrooms. Many clients at the Center are non-ambulatory, making seating and advance wheelchair systems a high priority for creative and innovative wheelchair adaptations. The Physical Therapy Department works jointly with the Adaptive Equipment Department and the Adaptive Equipment Shop to modify wheelchairs. Other clients, who are ambulatory, receive services that enhance their balance and mobility for travel on campus and off campus. As we continue to develop the PT Department, we look forward to research in aquatics, maximizing ambulatory and standing skills of the people at JIRDC, starting a Worker's Compensation Clinic, and much more. If you have any ideas, write to Bridget Dunford.
