What is NCI?

    North C arolina I nterventions            

 

    NCI is a standardized curriculum, teaching prevention/alternatives and de-escalation and management of aggressive behaviors through use of preventive measures and approved physical techniques. 

    There are currently three levels of NCI at the J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center:  Part A, Core, and Core Plus.

    NCI (Part A) consists of prevention/alternatives only.  No physical skills are taught.

    NCI (Core) includes prevention/alternatives and core techniques.  Core techniques include blocks and releases.

    NCI (Core Plus) includes prevention/alternatives, core techniques, and core plus/optional techniques.  Core Plus techniques include the therapeutic hold used for personal restraint and carries.

 

Who is required to take NCI?

    NCI is required for all staff who provide direct services to the people who live at the J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center.

 

How does an employee become NCI certified?

    JIRDC employees are certified in NCI when they complete the required training.

 

How does an employee enroll in an NCI class?

    NCI is taught monthly by Staff Development during each Training Unit.  Other employees can enroll in an NCI course with their supervisor's approval.  A waiting list is maintained for staff who are interested.

 

How is NCI training completed successfully?

    Satisfactory completion of NCI includes scoring 80% or higher on Part A and Restraint, Seclusion, and Timeout written exams and 100% on the demonstration of physical techniques.

 

How is an NCI review completed successfully?

    Satisfactory completion of an NCI review includes scoring 80% or higher on the written exam as well as demonstration and practice of all required physical techniques.

 

What happens if staff fail to review NCI skills yearly?

    Anyone who fails to review NCI skills yearly will be removed from the list of NCI-certified staff at the J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center.
