Germs are Everywhere

At home...

           at work...

            at the mall...

                 at concerts...

                  at ball games...

                           at the doctor's office...

anywhere you go...you could be exposed to germs that cause communicable or bloodborne diseases.

Some of the more common infectious diseases that you could be exposed to are:

parasites
  • influenza or flu
  • colds
  • stomach viruses
  • tuberculosis (TB)
  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA)
  • fungal infections
  • parasitic infections such as pinworms

Types of Parasites (pictured above): hookworms, tapeworms, roundworms, and pinworms.

Before vaccinations were available, measles (German and red), mumps, and chicken pox were all common communicable diseases that most people caught when they were young.  The people who live at JIRDC have either had the diseases or have been vaccinated.

Bloodborne diseases that you could be exposed to on the job include:

Circulating virion in a field of active red blood cells

  • hepatitis B (HBV)
  • hepatitis C (HCV)
  • human immunodeficiency virus (HIV or AIDS)

Workers at JIRDC follow Standard Precautions to prevent contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials.  Following these Standard Precautions will protect you, your coworkers, and the people who live here from contact with infectious materials.  Following Standard Precautions also helps prevent the spread of common communicable diseases and more serious bloodborne diseases.
