The Vocational Enrichment Program at J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center provides an array of vocational services, which highlight each individual's specific interest and positive skills relative to developing job opportunities. Work opportunities are offered in the areas of furniture manufacturing, craft production, service related assignments, horticulture, and supported employment occurring in local communities. Evaluation and training efforts are directed toward determining specific job interest and designed to build on the positive skills apparent in each area of interest to ensure early success. Jobs that require high rates of production, emphasizing speed and accuracy are a low priority and are avoided unless someone show a strong tendency for this category. Furniture production highlights the manufacturing of the Early American style of furniture featuring large items such as hutches, étagère, pie safes, tables, and smaller items such as quilt racks and pilgrim boxes. The craft program features traditional venues featuring pottery, weaving, flower arranging, soap and bath salt making, papermaking, ceramics, and other seasonal crafts. Numerous supported employment sites within the local community provide opportunity for work and integration in the areas of lawn maintenance, janitorial, office maintenance, shredding, recycling, and other areas as determined by each persons interest. The Vocational Enrichment Program offers support to area community programs by assisting with development of work programs that highlight a persons interests and abilities. In-services and training also occurs on campus, in other agencies, as well as in the community. Through special education training techniques, combined with assistive technology, the staff can assist individuals to reach their maximum potential. |
